Obsidian Research Limited (ORL) is a South Wales based SME specialising in the research, development and analysis of innovative products for the nutraceutical industries in the UK, Europe and North America. More than 70% of the staff are scientifically qualified in fields as diverse as Astrophysics to Medicine!
The starting point for the company was the development of high quality, viable, stable probiotic products in a range of packaged formats. Since then, the probiotic range has been expanded to include a variety of active ingredients alongside the probiotic organisms with no compromise to the high quality and stability of the products. The company specialises in the analysis and identification of probiotic organisms and is unique in holding a license to supply probiotics as Investigative Medicinal Products (IMPs) for use in clinical trials.
Alongside the probiotic products, there has been significant growth in the development of omega-3 oil based products both as pure oils and, more innovatively, in stable, highly palatable, emulsified formats that enable realistic daily dosages of the omega-3 oils.
The Quality System conforms to the International Standard EN ISO/IEC 17025; BS EN ISO 9001:2008; HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points), Food Law, GMP and Investors in People (IiP).
ORL has established links with local, national and international research institutes and universities and has supported more than a dozen PhD studentships through these collaborative links. Reciprocal arrangements have resulted in placements of students through summer placements (via the Go Wales Scheme) and longer term visits by international students actively working within the laboratories to gain commercial research experience through the EU/Japan Vulcanus Programme. The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Scheme has provided and continues to provide excellent long lasting links with Universities.
